DIY Bunny Teething Ring | Utah Family Photographer

Since I'm nearing the start of my third trimester, nesting has started to kick in and I've finally been able to tackle my long "to-do" list before baby boy gets here. The funny thing with pregnancy is some days I feel great and organize an entire room. Other days I can barely manage to get dressed and feed the rest of the household. It's a wonderful give and take. More often than naught, I have this strong desire to do something but the energy involved in doing nothing. This was one of those days. I bought these cute little wooden rings forever ago - like when I found out I was pregnant with Peyton (whom I later miscarried.) Since then they have been sitting in my drawer, just waiting to be turned into something. I decided to raid my extra fabric and turn them into cute, little, Bunny Teething Rings. I'd seen them at some boutiques and online and thought they would be so simple to make. - Luckily I was right!

Materials Needed:

  • Wooden Rings
  • Fabric Scraps
  • Terry Cloth - I just bought a cheap pack of washcloths at Target
  • Pins
  • Sewing Machine
  • Thread
  • Scissors or Rotary Cutter
  • Cardstock (for the template)

To start, you'll want to prewash all your fabric as well as your teething rings. I just soaked mine in soapy water for a big and let them completely dry.

Next, fold your cardstock in half and trace a rough shape of half of your bunny ear on the fold. Once you've done that, cut it out. (Don't worry if it's not exact, once you cut it out you can always fold it in half the opposite way and trim it so that it's equal)

Once cut out, pin it to your terry cloth - or in my case, wash cloth. In the future I'll make my template a bit bigger to use up as much of the washcloth as I can. (You don't even have to use terry cloth as your backing - I just did to help mop up all the baby drool and slobber)

Once it's cut out, do the same thing to your fabric. I opted to use a flannel to make it nice and soft for baby.

You should now have two fabric pieces - front and back.

Pin the two pieces of fabric together with the pattern touching on the inside.

Sew along the edge of the fabric - I gave myself about a quarter seam allowance, but you can do whatever you feel comfortable with. Sew all the way around except for about an inch in the middle.

(It should look like this when you're done with)

Use scissors or a rotary cutter and snip off the point to your bunny ears. This will help with bulk on the inside. I also trimmed up the edges a bit where they didn't exactly line up straight. (Be careful not to snip your seam!)

Using the inch or so gap in the seam, flip the bunny ear inside out. If needed you can take a pencil and make sure the points are turned out all the way.

Once it is right side out, pin the opening closed and sew a new seam around the ears. This not only closes the gap, but helps with the structure of the teething toy.

Fold your ears in half - terry cloth side together and thread through the ring. Once you've got it looking like the picture, take the ears and thread through the small fold in the fabric.

Pull it taught and adjust the ears how you like and you're done!

Like I said earlier, in the future when I make more of these I'll make my template longer so that my ears will have a little bit more length to them. This probably took about 20 minutes from start to finish - not bad at all! (To wash these, just use mild soapy water) Not only am I so excited about these cute little toys for my own babe, but for all the baby showers I have on the horizon! The only thing I had to go out and purchase was the stack of washcloths - and that will be enough for all my rings. Not bad for $3!
