How to Take Better Cell Phone Pictures [Part Three] | Salt Lake City Family Photographer

I have loved blogging this series! It's been so fun to think of ways that I can help improve your everyday cell phone pictures. Because, lets be honest, I'm probably one of the 5% of the population that still caries around a camera everyday in addition to my iphone. If I wasn't a photographer, I probably would only have iphone shots. Cell phone cameras are comparable with point and shoot digital cameras, so why add the extra bulk? But just like with every tool, it's all about learning to use it. I have three more tips that will help improve your cell phone photography. (if you're interested in reading, here are parts one and two.)

1. USE A GRID

Most, if not all camera phones come with a grid option. Use it to help compose your photo. Remember my post about using the rule of thirds when shooting? Basically place your subject along the lines, bonus if it's at an intercepting point. Your eye finds these compositions visually appealing. Not only is the grid perfect for shooting in the rule of thirds, it also helps make sure your horizon line is straight!

2. USE SURROUNDINGS TO "FRAME" YOUR SUBJECT

While in Oregon, we picked blackberries at my grandma's house. I knew that blackberry vines would be perfect to frame Jones with. By utilizing your environment and surroundings, you can create a frame that makes your photograph more interesting and intentional.

3. TRY DIFFERENT ANGLES

This goes along with making your photos more intentional. By providing different angles and point of views for your viewer, you are helping guide them through your story telling. It makes the images more appealing to look at, especially when provided an angle that may not be your "typical" viewpoint. By holding my phone over Jones' head and snapping the picture I was able to create a new and interesting vantage point. It helps break up the series of images so that they aren't all of people in front of black berry bushes.
