Everyone needs a good headshot of themselves. Whether it's for business purposes, social media presence or you just need a good picture for Tinder. But when these pictures are just of you, it can be daunting to figure out what to wear. - Especially when you don't have other outfits or people to lean on and pull colors from. With warmer and prettier weather right around the corner, I thought it would be a good idea to do a three part break down of what to wear for your headshots.
First, you have to consider the type of headshot you're going for; business professional? casual? casually business? There are honestly endless possibilities. The best way to go about this is to know where these will be seen. Take me for example, I photograph 98% of my sessions outdoors, in the mountains, with natural light. It would seem out of place and give my clients the wrong impression of my work if they were to look at a headshot of me done with studio lighting, backdrop, indoors. Knowing the location and look you're going for will help determine the rest of your outfit.
Next, lets talk about the actual clothes. Headshots are all about YOU - you'll want to wear something that doesn't pull away from you as the focus. I tend to gravitate towards solids and subtle textures/patterns. (Unless being loud with your clothes is who you are and then by all means go for it! Part of knowing the "rules" is knowing when they can be broken.) Avoiding neon and brightly colored hues makes it so that we don't have to deal with color casts. (Color casts are when color is reflected onto your skin, making you appear to be whatever color you're wearing.)
The final thing that I will preach from the rooftops regarding any outfit you choose to wear for whatever type of session you have: wear what you feel comfortable in. I'm not saying don't wear the killer shoes because they hurt to walk in. I'm saying don't wear something you wouldn't wear in real life, out in the wild. Take me and jumpsuits for example. I think they are SO cute on everyone, in fact, I even have one that I wear when I'm feeling brave. But I would never decide to wear it for a photoshoot because it's something that I'm not 100% comfortable with. Taking a fashion risk is so fun and brave, but not on a day that you're getting your picture taken. You want to wear an outfit that is put together and most importantly, YOU! Headshots are a way to show your personality, not play dress up and pretend. Wear something that you love and feel confident in and it will 100% show through in your photos.
