Ok, let's talk footwear. 

Shoes for photoshoots can be one of the stressful, last minute, night before the shoot, throw it together moments. They can be a total afterthought - especially if you have boys with a lack of options in their closet. It's one of those moments where you've had outfits picked out - all coordinating and ironed and then it dawns on you that you have no idea what shoes everyone will wear. I've had this experience and it feels like that sinking feeling when you'd forget your homework at home. ha. 

But let me let you in on a little secret that is best represented by a quote from Ever After when Danielle comes out dressed in a gown to buy back a servant. To deflect the attention to her outfit she says, "the shoes are too big" in which Gustave responds, "Nobody will be looking at your feet."

Boom. That's it. It doesn't matter. 

I know what you're thinking, and like all art, there are a lot of variables and factors to consider before you just put a blanket statement like that out there. So, for all you who need a little more guidance, this one's for you.

NEUTRALS

- neutral shoes will be your best friend. Tan, white, black, brown? You're golden. Just make sure that they aren't the darkest thing in the picture or your eye will be drawn to it. (If black is all you have, see the next point for a sneaky way to get away with them.)

LOCATION

- Often an overlooked aid when choosing shoes and outfits is location. This is where (location depending) you could get away with just about anything. If you're going somewhere with tall grass, flowers, etc, there is a REALLY good chance your shoes won't even be seen in any of the pictures. So if I'm shooting up the canyon in the thick of the wildflowers, no one needs to know that I ditched the heels and instead am sporting some Chacos with my dress. 

- Another point about location; don't wear 6 inch heels to the Saltair unless you want to be falling and sinking in the sand every five seconds. Use a little common sense when choosing shoes. Same goes for weather - although your red pumps may look amazing against the white snow, if we're going off trail and knee deep in snow banks they probably aren't the most practical thing in the world to wear. (You can always bring boots and switch them out later for a few shots when you're not waist deep in snow) 

Sticking to neutrals and knowing your location is all you need to know when you've realized that shoes are an afterthought - no need to Amazon the kids a new pair of shoes (unless you need an excuse! haha!) Because when it comes down to it, nobody will be looking at your feet. They'll be looking at the smiles and the love and connections you have with your family, which is the whole reason you got your pictures taken in the first place.
