How to Prep For Senior Pictures

October 05, 2018  •  Leave a Comment

One of the most exciting things I love to photograph are high school graduating seniors! They are so full of life and are so eager for this next chapter in their lives. Once you have your photographer booked, there are a few things to do to help get you ready for your pictures.

WEEKS BEFORE:

1. Choose a location

If you decide to book with me, we will go over different location ideas and find the perfect one for you at our consultation. Being involved in choosing the location is so helpful for me, the photographer, in getting a feel for who you are. Believe it or not, just from our conversations in the start of our relationships I am able to figure out what kind of prompts to use to get the best version of you! Plus it's fun to visually start planning your shoot!

2. Choose an outfit (or two!)

This can be one of the most fun or most stressful parts of planning your senior shoot. If you need help, you can take a look at my style guide. I am always there for assistance, so feel free to text me ideas or Marco Polo me from the mall! (It's happened before.)

DAY BEFORE

3. Lay out your clothes

This may seem silly, but laying out your clothes the day before helps build the excitement! Plus, it gives you one last chance to go over everything with an iron or lint roller. Savannah sent me this picture (below) right before our shoot. I love that she even laid out her accessories!

4. Get a good night's sleep

Not to sound like a mom, but you need to get a good night's sleep before your pictures! We want you at full capacity to be your happy, smiling self! And don't forget to stay hydrated!

DAY OF THE SHOOT

5. Eat all your meals

I don't know about you, but I get hangry if I skip a meal. Make sure to eat throughout the day - not just to avoid being grumpy, but so you'll have energy! Plus, safety. I've had friends who've been on photoshoots when their bride passes out from fatigue. Photoshoots can be exhausting, regardless if you're wearing a big dress or not. Luckily that has never happened to my clients, but just to be safe, grab a granola bar or something on your way to the shoot. We want full bellies!

6. Professional Makeup application

When working with me for senior pictures, professional makeup is included with my session fee. My girl, Sarah (over at Sarah Hicken Artistry) is the best and she comes to you. As soon as you've booked your session and we've nailed down a date, the three of us coordinate to figure out when makeup needs to be done. From there, I leave you in Sarah's more than capable hands and let her work her magic!

7. Meet up for the shoot!

Now the fun can really begin! With you all dolled up wearing the perfect outfit at an amazing location we can start our photoshoot. Don't forget to bring a water bottle for during and after the shoot!
