Winter Outfit Inspiration | Salt Lake City Family Photographer

In the family photo world we call fall; "family picture season." It's our busiest time of the year. With the kids back in school and some structure to their schedule they are able to plan better for pictures. Not to mention that Mother Nature really shows off during Utah falls! There is also a 95% chance that these family pictures will end up on their Christmas card. But for those that want snow pictures, their time is coming! As freezing as it is, I looooove taking pictures in the snow. The snow acts as a giant diffuser and reflector and helps bounce even light all over the place. Not to mention, falling snow with a wide open lens looks like magic! There is one drawback - how do you dress for pictures in literal freezing weather? I've compiled a bunch of images from my all time favorite snow shoots that show how you can look good, but keep warm!

© Whitney Beth Photography Scarlet's mom bought her a matching coat to wear for her baptism dress. Coats are great for adding layers and warmth, and if you forgo the Columbia Sportswear ski coat, you've got a lot of options for stylish winter wear.

For Nick and Heidi's engagements they wore lots of layers! Nick toughed out the cold, while Heidi wore a scarf and a cute peacoat.

What'd I tell you about snow looking magical!? Here's another example of classy (warm) coats!

Everyone is wearing lots of layers and we did this fast! We were actually right next to the cars so the little ones were moved back to the warmth when they weren't needed.

So much fun and magic!

I hope these have softened your thoughts on being outside in the freezing cold for pictures. While snow may not be for everyone, it certainly adds an extra layer of magic to your images and allows you and your family to be the focus!
