Austin + Jenna | Salt Lake City Engagements

I may be a bit biased, since this is my brother and sister in law, but I am obsessed with how these engagements turned out! With it being family, I feel like I can "gently persuade" them to shoot in a location I have been dying to shoot at. I was already leaning towards Emigration Canyon, but then I saw the dress that Jenna had picked out, and it wasn't a question. We were totally shooting up Emigration Canyon. Luckily my siblings know by now to just trust me and my creative process.

The day of the shoot I watched the weather like a hawk (I always do). You're never 100 percent sure of the weather in Utah, especially when you go up the canyons. I picked up Austin and Jenna in my little Explorer and we headed up Parleys. Our Aunt lives up there, so we've got the inside scoop with lots of beautiful trails. The entire drive, my eyes kept glancing towards the sky. Thick, dark clouds were looming in the direction we were headed. I was worried they would ruin the sunset that I was banking on. As we drove up, they got thicker and the light more diffused.

The first place I took them was a little foot trial that wound up the side of the mountain. I had seen it in a photo my aunt showed me and wanted to shoot there for all the little, yellow flowers along the path. We hiked up to a meadow, spent some time there and then headed back down to go to the top of Little Mountain. It had the most beautiful view of the valleys and reservoir below. Luckily they clouds had been good to us and diffused the light on on side, leaving visible blue patches on the other. I was still bummed about the lack of sunset. Especially when we got to the reservoir. I was planning on bright shades of pink streaming across the sky and reflecting off the water. It was still beautiful, but I couldn't help but feel a tad bummed. After we had used the last bit of light, we loaded up in the car to drive home. Just as we were getting onto the 215 and coming out of the canyon, we were graced with the brilliant sunset I had been hoping for! Without a second thought I took the next exit where I knew an elementary school was. Racing against the light we managed to get to the highest point we could. I grabbed Austin and Jenna and concluded out photoshoot (for real) with the last remaining sun rays of the evening.
