SLC Valley Color Wall Location Guide | Whitney Beth Photography

IT IS DONE. I feel like Frodo at the end of Lord of the Rings. One of my biggest photo series is finished! This project was born yeeeears ago. (For real.) You see, my brother and sister in law live in Spanish Fork, and to get to there house you have to pass Doctor John's Lingerie Boutique. If you've never driven past or never paid attention to it, it's a beautiful shade of lavender that sticks out among the ever growing strip malls and McDonalds. Every time we drive past it I think how fun it would be to shoot at that wall. This thought graduated to doing a series of all the colors of the rainbow. For the next year few years I made a mental not of all the colorful walls I found as I passed them. This was great and all, but provided very little use to me since I would completely forget about said wall until I drove past it again. It wasn't until last year that things started getting serious. I had this perfectly pretty, pink, blush wall straight outta the 90's picked out. (By this point I had started keeping a note in my phone of addresses and color walls.) My blush wall had waited so long to fiiiinally come back in "style" as a backdrop, only to have it BE PAINTED BLACK. Now, in that building's defense it looks 100% better black than it ever did blush, but it left me shook. I was suddenly grounded. What if all my other walls were painted? That would be years of work down the drain! I immediately sent out a post asking for models and within three weeks had all FIFTEEN walls shot and photographed. Some days cranking out up four walls back to back. So much work, but SO WORTH IT! And while we're on the subject of work, my models KILLED IT! Some are sisters, (bet you can't guess which ones. ha!) some are friends of friends, past clients, Instagram followers, and friends, and all are beautiful and amazing! They are amazing and found/picked out their outfits and humored my crazy color requests. So thank you to Camyrn, Makayla, Emma, Lyndsay, Callie, Hailey, Janessa, Jessica, Julie, Kenzie, Maddy, Mindy, Alora and Brecken! You all helped my dream become a reality!

(If you end up visiting or shooting any of these walls, tag me so I can see! Also, it's good etiquette to ask permission to shoot at these walls since most of these are businesses)

Now, without further ado, my SLC Valley Color Wall Location Guide!

WHITE

Location: Gourmandise Bakery (725 E 12300 S Draper)

Best Time to Shoot: Morning. (we shot at 9 am. The most shootable wall was west facing and I didn't want any harsh light on my model. It also helps to go before they open - since this is in their drive thru! I loved the texture this wall has with the different patterns to make the white have more details and depth)

PINK

Location: Traverse Mountain Outlets (3700 N Cabela's Blvd Lehi)

Best Time to Shoot: Morning (We shot these at around 11 am - the wall is north facing)

RED

Location: Papa Murphy's (150 E 3300 S SLC)

Best Time to Shoot: Morning (We shot these at 9:15 am, the wall is west facing)

ORANGE

Location: Tres Hombres (3298 Highland Drive SLC)

Best Time to Shoot: Morning or late evening (We shot these about 9:45 am, but the whole building is orange, so you can shoot pretty much whenever. This particular wall is west facing.)

YELLOW

Location: IKEA (67 Ikea Way, Draper)

Best Time to Shoot: Morning would be best, the yellow is over by the family parking and faces west. You can make evening work, like we did, but you have to shoot by the entrance (which may be embarrassing for you and your model! - luckily Callie and I have no shame) (We shot these about 5:30 pm)

LEMON

Location: Traverse Mountain Outlets (3700 N Cabela's Blvd Lehi)

Best Time to Shoot: Morning (We shot these at around 11 am - the wall is north facing)

LIME

Location: Persnickety Prints (190 N Orem BLVD)

Best Time to Shoot: Morning (we shot about 8:30 am, this wall faces west)

FOREST GREEN

Location: Persnickety Prints (190 N Orem BLVD)

Best Time to Shoot: Morning (we shot about 8:30 am, this wall faces west)

TEAL

Location: Chatbooks (1045 E 2100 S SLC)

Best Time To Shoot: Morning or Evening (We shot these at 9 am, but with they way the building is sandwiched between other buildings on the block you could shoot in the evening too, despite the wall being west facing, because it's neighbor will block the harsh light for you)

LIGHT BLUE

Location: Waffle Love (12291 S State Street, Draper)

Best Time to Shoot: Morning or Evening (We shot this around 10 am, there are shootable west and east facing walls, but I chose west facing so that my model wouldn't have to be in the drive thru while everyone watched while they waited for food. The East facing wall has a bigger area to shoot, so go when it's not close to a meal time.)

BLUE

Location: Persnickety Prints (190 N Orem BLVD)

Best Time to Shoot: Morning (we shot about 8:30 am, this wall faces west)

ROYAL BLUE

Location: IKEA (67 Ikea Way, Draper)

Best Time to Shoot: Morning or Evening (We shot this wall about 5:30 pm, but there are enough blue walls that you could make it work for whatever time you needed. The wall we shot on was East facing)

LAVENDER

Location: Doctor John's Lingerie Boutique (942 E 800 N, Spanish Fork)

Best Time to Shoot: Evening (We shot around 6:30 pm, the east facing wall has the most shootable space, but you could really shoot on either side.)

PURPLE

Location: Mischievous (559 s 300 w) - another "adult shop"

Best Time to Shoot: Morning or Evening (We shot around 8:30 am because the wall with the pink stripes was west facing. The south and north facing walls are both purple so you could shoot anytime for those.)

BLACK

Location: Piper & Scoot (892 E 12300 S, Draper)

Best Time to Shoot: Evening (We shot around 5:30 pm, the black walls are east facing)

AND THERE YOU HAVE IT! I could just look at these pictures all day. If you love these, would you mind hitting the Facebook "like" button or Pinning it to Pinterest? Let's share the love! Like I mentioned above, if you end up going to or using any of these walls, tag me so I can see! (This should also go without saying, but just in case; don't forget to ask and be respectful of these businesses! Most of these shoots were done in the morning so as to not disrupt their business day.) Thanks for reading! Which wall is your favorite? Let me know in the comments!

Way to go Whitney! How clever to use these colorful walls that compliment each model and her matching outfit. What a fun idea! I never knew there were so many bright colored buildings in the area. You totally rocked the photo shoot, thanks for the fun idea and tips!
