When to Book Senior Pictures | Whitney Beth Photography

I know I literally just talked about our summer bucket list, but seniors - this one is for you.

I get asked a lot, "When should I book my senior pictures?" followed by *crickets* and then nothing until May of the next year from frantic seniors who procrastinated and now need pictures in time for graduation. SO - with that being said, when should you book your senior pictures?

The first question I ask in response is what kind of pictures do they want? Scenery and weather are the biggest determining factors to when you should book.

For example; if you want wildflower pictures, you need to be talking to your photographer in the summer before you got to school. Fall leaves? Start talking to your photographer as soon as school starts (if not sooner.)

If you wait until the new year and call me in January wanting color - well, our options are going to be limited to indoor locations. To help break it down, I created this little list of a quick run down of the types of pictures you can get depending on when you book.

Month of shoot Type of Scenery
July/August Wildflowers + green
September Sunflowers/golden grass
October Fall leaves
November Dead trees/possible snow
Dec/Jan/Feb Snow/Dead trees
March Possible snow/Possible blossom
April Blossom/budding trees
May Blossom/Lilac blooms/yellow flowers

This is just a rough estimate of what you'll get depending on when you want to shoot - and to make a long answer short: As soon as you want! There's no such thing as, "too early for senior pictures." The second you end your junior year, you can start looking for senior photographers or finding out what you want yours to look like. Don't be like all the procrastinators that get dead trees in their background when you were really wanting yellow sunflowers.

*It's also important to note when you need to submit pictures for the yearbook

So seniors, what's your dream location and look for documenting this big milestone? Start thinking now and let your photographer know!
