I've been going back through my archives to blog sessions that haven't had the chance to be featured yet. I took a loooong (unintentional) break from blogging and fell behind on posting my photo shoots. Penny's newborns will always be one of my top favorite photoshoots of all time. Her momma is my best friend. We grew up together and have stayed just as close despite all the obstacles life throws at two growing families. When Penny was born Amanda and Josh were still living in Cedar City. Danny, Jones and I loaded up the car and drove down for a day trip + to take Penny's newborns. I did the same thing when Kimber was born.
Out of all the babies I've photographed, Penny has been the easiest. I have never seen a babe let me pose and wrap and shoot as much as she did. No fusing and she was awake for most of it! (totally unheard of!) My approach with newborns is a "lifestyle" way of posing. Instead of the cute squishy baby frog poses with all the props, I prefer a more documentary, minimalistic way of doing things. (Props to you newborn photographers who have all the poses down, the set up etc! Newborns are hard work!) When I was about halfway through the shoot with Penny, I asked Amanda if I could use some of the flowers from her bouquets she had gotten from well wishers and family. Amanda told me to go for it! I was the pro and she trusted what I had in mind.
While Penny had a little snack break I deconstructed a bouquet or two and arranged them on the bed in a wreath. One happy, fed, swaddled baby later and we had captured one of my favorite shots from the whole shoot. From there we were able to grab a few more shots and then I turned the wreath into a garland and had big sis jump in for some pictures. Kimberly proudly told me she was wearing her, "picture dress." I am thrilled with how these turned out. So much so that every time I look at them I think that maybe I could start taking on more newborns! haha!
