The last thing I wanted to make for baby's room was his mobile. I decided with Jones that I always wanted to make my kids their baby quilts and a mobile. Since this little dude's room is a Woodland themed nursery I was sticking with my plan of bringing tons of nature and organic elements into the design process. I spent so much time and invested so much to the detail of the baby quilt (you can see it here) that I didn't want the mobile to be too busy and detract from all the other elements of the room. Using left over scrap from the quilt I decided to make leaves! I made two templates from cardboard and traced as many leaves as I could get from three fabrics. (I only used three to keep it from being too busy.) I chose the scrap fabric from the darker, deeper greens to help balance the amount of light green in the room. When I made Jones' mobile of hot air balloons and clouds, I decided on wooden dowels to hang my creations. Never again. haha! I spent so much time trying to balance the balloons and keep it even without compromising my original idea that there was no way I was going down that road again. Instead, I used the inner hoop from an embroidery hoop. SO much simpler - and bonus was that I got a wooden one that didn't require me to paint it since wood accent pieces were scattered around the nursery.
I spent a lot of time troubleshooting how exactly I wanted the mobile to look and a lot of wasted time on leafy vines that just didn't look good. I finally settled on a design and got to work sewing all my leaves together. To give them a little more oomphf I sewed veins onto a few of them - this was excellent for giving a subtle variety. Once they were all sewed and ironed, I used some thread that is a mix between twine and string that I had randomly in a drawer and assembled the "vines" of leaves. Once all the leaves were on, I tied them to the hoop and created a hanging system with the twine. I then used invisible thread to string it up to the ceiling with a command hook. It's so simple, yet so perfect and I love how it turned out!
